 Report Cards

Report cards for third quarter will be sent home on Friday, March 27th. After reviewing your child’s progress with him or her, please sign the envelope and return it the next school day.

Literacy
In both reading and writing we are finishing up our unit on biographies. In writing, students have researched their famous person and filled out a note taking chart. This week, they will draft, revise, edit, and publish using technology their own biographies.
Our final unit for third quarter will involve a research project. Students will first select a topic related to geography to research. Next, they will brainstorm and select guiding questions to use when researching. Mini lessons will model how to use a note-taking chart to consolidate their information, sources to use when researching, and how to put
the information found into their own words. Once students have found the answers to their questions, they will prepare an oral presentation which will also incorporate the use of technology.
In reading, we are learning how to collect, compare, and contrast information on the same topic from multiple texts, both printed and digital. Students will also learn to use illustrations and other graphic features within texts to gather facts during the research process. We will also review the signal words associated with writing that involves steps in a process such as in recipes or craft directions.
 Math
Third graders are comparing fractions using concrete models, linear models, area models, set models and number lines. Next, they will identify equivalent fractions using various activities. They will make equivalence chains of fractions. In addition, students will learn what an improper fraction and mixed numbers is, and learn how to plot them on a number line.
Social Studies

During third quarter, students will be learning about geography. Currently, they are focusing on studying maps, vs. globes, as well as the different types of maps. Third graders will learn to use longitude and latitude to locate a place.  They will also be learning about landforms. Students will be able to identify the three different regions found within North Carolina and identify the related landform that they are mostly made up of:  the Mountain Region, the Piedmont, and Coastal Plain Region.
